Had Joseph been told a year in advance
that he would be a goin' to Bethlehem
that he would be the husband of a virgin - with child,
and he'd be running to save the babe from mayhem . . .
I can hear him as he would have said:
Ain't no way I'm doin' that!
That he'd go up yearly and freely give away
money to the government of that day
spend the night in the stable with animals
his wife giving birth; now that was laughable
I can just hear what he would have said:
Ain't no way I'm doin' that!
Joseph, the son your wife to be - now carries
will be hunted, go quickly, don't tary
He is Almighty God in the flesh
put not away Mary, but in marriage mesh
Yep, I can imagine what he would have to say:
Ain't no way I'm doin' that!
Call His name Jesus, teach Him a trade
take Him to Jerusalem each year to pay
take Him to the temple for to confound
the prophets and priests, men of renown
Again, I can hear him say:
Ain't no way I'm doin' that!
He will feed thousands with very little
heal the sick, the maimed and the cripple
but arrest him they will, and then be tried
hold your peace, and stand still beside
As a protective father he would have said:
Ain't no way I'm doin' that!
After Jesus' death, had arisen and taken up
the priests and elders mocking the newborn church
you'll have to suffer and drink from His cup
they'll kill His followers, their names besmirch
No doubt he would have said:
Ain't no way I'm doin' that!
But shun His bitter cup if you think you must
in hell you'll burn, scream, rot and rust
just play around, follow the crowd 'n earthly lust
for sure, wide open hell you'll bust!
And I can hear the passion in his voice as he says:
Ain't NOOO way I'm doin' that!
