I took offense one fine day
at what some dude decided to say
"If yer tryin,' yer liein"
he said with a grin

I thot how funny his toothy grin would be
if'n he was missin a couple of teeth or three
but, I held my peace, and turned to go
but it stuck in my crawl for a week or so

A wonderin just what he meant
and after a thinkin about it a while
I then wondered if he were heaven sent
'cuz sometimes we can't - unless we're bent

Now I've always used the term "I'm trying"
and so has about everyone else I know
but, if you're only trying
are you really doing everything to toe?

Or, are we just giving up without
even a brush of effort to work things out
"Oh well, I tried" we say, then just turn away
if that's really what we do - then we need to pray!

The only way things get done sometimes
is when we go above and beyond pititful attempts
and leave openings in defense lines
which allows the enemy in the fence

But one day we'll certainly stand before
Him Who knows our thoughts and more
knows our intentions . . . oe'r what we pore
and why we lied about giving the chore

Just a brushing glance,
hit the high spots and no more
I wonder how complete salvation would be
if He had not bought

When He prayed till He sweated blood
from the effort in the garden
when He stood before Pilate - the crowd that forgot
no friendly face in crowd though He sought

Why, only just days before they'd all been fed
with bread He'd supplied; heavenly manna,
yet now they openly and crassly scream
crucify, crucify - something of a bad dream

And now on His shoulders and all alone
his back in ribbons, bleeding, shred to the bone
with His last strength and effort He got up that hill
with His cross on which to pay the bill

And knowing the story, heard it all our lives
we blandly shrug off with smug chortle
"I'm Trying. . ." when the blatant truth is
If Yer Trying, Yer Lying"
