Mary Was The First

Jesus stood bound there in the temple one frightful day
all alone, the others affrighted; all scared away
Some say Jesus was the first to suffer scorn,
back beaten and bloody, on His head, a crown of thorns,

But, according to the Word, there was one before Him
just a mortal, but with promise divine
She knew before her babe was ever born,
when angels she heard singing heavenly lines

But t'was no comfort as the people all winced and gossiped
"Mary is a harlot - obviously," whispers to a frenzy whipped
Found with child even though a man she'd never known
feeling the shame of Josephs' confidence stripped

Never knowing when the truth would come to light
unexpectantly, came the angel late in the night
Speaking of a miracle of virgin birth, that she would host
was created by something called the Holy Ghost

The "fable" just kept growing
as the miracles kept coming
Elizabeth, with child in her age
Zacharias stricken dumb at laughing

That at his own age he would father the forunner
of the long awaited Messiah
It all seemed as if a dream, angelic orators
spoken of by prophet Isaiah

"Your God shall come to you" centuries earlier revealed
the lame to leap, dumb shall talk, eyes see, masses healed
Mary was first for Him to suffer scorn
from that of a virgin, He would be born

Never spoken of in the Word
was acceptance of Marys' story heard
All her life she was mother of a bastard child
on top of that, introduced by a man of the wild

Never did Jesus ever shake off the moniker of illegitimate
doubted even past His miracles and teachings
resented, accused, now standing before Pilates gaze
the crowd, fury whipped into a craze

Standing stripped of dignity and beaten, on His last mile
His own scorn a magnified reflection of His mother
No doubt standing in the crowd at his trial
tucked into her heart things known by no other

She watched as the crowd cried "crucify"
knowing in the scriptures the son was killed
Her heart wrenching to see her son die
His broken and ravaged body, His heart stilled

But something in her heart held out hope
when she followed the crowd up the slope
Where they would hang the Door
the Way, the Truth, the Life, and more

She felt that He would rise again
and that He would shine anew
Through the centuries the accuser stirred doubt and stain
against Mary, mother of Jesus that knew

He was more than a mere earthling babe
He was the Lamb, with the blood of God still fresh
A Well of Living Water, the Gate
Mary was the first to know He was God; in the flesh
