Only Yesterday

Only yesterday, mom recalls my birth
a present from God, while here on earth
but like the grass that withers,
quickly, spring, summer and winters

A tear wells up in my eye
when I question and wonder why
life is so short and we soon pass away
why, it seems as only yesterday

The tear rolls down my cheek
pushing me to melancholy deep
thoughts of a lifetime so quickly spent,
such a short time on earth we're lent

My, but my youth has been grand
walking barefoot in the sand
not a care o'er which to worry
not realizing life goes by in such a hurry

Way too soon gone, it's price so very steep
like a limited cistern, it did so quickly seep
then the appointment of which all will keep
only yesterday, then life is over and we weep

It was only yesterday in my youth
strong, resilient, lively and aloof
unlearned in the ways of life
only yesterday, I experienced its strife

Only yesterday I stood straight, tall and bold
and now I am stooped, grey and old
of life on this earth I can see an end
then a whole existence, in glory I'll begin

Life is of few days and trouble
all on this earth will become only rubble
store in heaven all your treasures
for a life to come, 'way beyond measure

Only yesterday my life began
fierce storms blew and caused me to sway
but standing firm in Him I solidly stand
and look forward with gladness and say - Only yesteday
